The Langtang Valley Trek offers a perfect introduction to Himalayan trekking, combining stunning scenery, rich culture, and accessibility from Kathmandu. Known as the “Valley of Glaciers,” Langtang lies just north of the capital, yet feels worlds away—a steep-sided valley surrounded by snow peaks and filled with the traditions of the Tamang people.
The trek begins with a scenic drive to Syabru Besi, then climbs through dense forests of oak and rhododendron along the Langtang Khola. Red pandas inhabit these forests, and if you’re lucky, you may spot one in the undergrowth. As you ascend, traditional villages appear: stone houses with intricately carved windows, prayer wheels spinning in the breeze, and butter tea waiting in family-run lodges.
The valley opens dramatically at Langtang Village, rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake, where yaks graze beneath the massive wall of Langtang Lirung (7,227m). The trail continues to Kyanjin Gompa, home to an ancient monastery and a yak cheese factory. From here, climb Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) or Tserko Ri (4,984m) for panoramic views that stretch from the Tibetan border peaks to the distant Ganesh Himal.
